NATURE OF SPECIMEN:
1.  Rectum biopsy x 6 (MC).
2.  Anal biopsy x 1.
CLINICAL DETAILS:
Proctitis with ulceration.
GROSS DESCRIPTION:
1.  Six biopsies, the largest measuring 3mm and the smallest 2mm.
S6 1B NS PC
2.  Two biopsies, the larger measuring 3mm and the smaller 2mm.
S2 1B NS PC
HISTOLOGY:
1.  Multiple biopsies of large intestinal mucosa, one of which shows surface erosion with fibrino-purulent pseudomembranous exudate.  There are non-specific mucosal prolapse-like changes.  There are no crypt abscesses or obvious signs of active proctitis or granulomatous inflammation.  The features are slightly unusual and raise possibility of solitary rectal ulcer syndrome.  Please correlate with the biopsy site and other endoscopic features.
2.  Very superficial detached and fragmented fragments of large intestinal epithelium.  There is no evidence of dysplasia but the sample is strictly insufficient for diagnosis.
