NATURE OF SPECIMEN:
Thyroid FNA,
CLINICAL DETAILS:
Hard nodule to right of isthmus.   Coarse calcification but also multiple tiny echogenic foci ??micro-calcification.     2 x FNA – feels really hard.
1.   2 x air dried slides.     2.   2nd pass – cytospin – visible micro-core – please process.
?Papillary carcinoma.
GROSS DESCRIPTION:

  1. 20 mls green fluid with one small core of tissue - held
CYTOLOGICAL REPORT:
1-2.   Cellular aspirates containing numerous pigment laden macrophages and a second population of atypical epithelioid cells arranged in papillary clusters with more than and the nuclei, well defined cell membranes and focal nuclear moulding.   Microcalcifications are identified.   The cytospin preparation yielded a small cluster of similarly atypical cells.
The features are suspicious of papillary carcinoma assuming this is a primary tumour; Thy5.
